The Upward Arrow

The subject of this book is, in Fr. Colum's own words, "holiness in the domestic battle," that age-old struggle to uphold the sacred amidst the secular.
At the center of his wisdom on the topic is his gifted ability to turn life experience into meaningful story. As the fifth of nine boys to loving "spiritual warrior" parents, as a novice in the religious life steeped in the teachings of the great spiritual masters, and as a priest who formed trusted friendships with many young people, he has been a witness to many souls searching for truth and beauty in the divine. His aptitude for absorbing life's moments and sharing them in witty and wise stories sets him apart as an extraordinary bestower of sage advice.
Not only will his words propel you forth in your upward journey, but so will his example as a perceptive Christian who never fails to see God's hand in all moments of life.
Fr. Colum Power is a native of Cork, Ireland, and a Servant Priest of the Home of the Mother. He is the author of Honey from the Lion's Carcass, A Touch of the Gardener's Hand, and James Joyce's Catholic Categories. Currently living in Ecuador and serving the parish of Our Lady of Loreto in Guayaquil, he devotes much of his time to apostolic activities for the youth.

I love Fr. Colum! Of the dozens of priests whom I've known over the years, there are few I love more. There are many reasons for this. One is his ability to spin a good yarn, or what he might call the gift of the blarney or the gift of the gab. Another is his gift as a very fine writer of poetic prose. Yet another is his lived love for the Lord. All three of these things that I love about Fr. Colum are present in this book. I can think of no better reason to read it and learn from it, not least because it will help us to live the love for the Lord.
Fr. Colum Power, with his very Irish gift for telling a tale, has given us a remarkable book, full of powerful stories drawn from daily life, history, and Scripture. Vigorous, funny, and overflowing with unflinching pastoral wisdom, The Upward Arrow begins as a son’s tribute to his parents’ marriage and becomes not only a celebration of the Christian family but also a road map for Christian life in our own difficult times.
The Upward Arrow directs our gaze to our proper target: the joy of Christ that reaches us through the messiness of everyday life. The commitment of spouses to one another and to their children truly becomes a ladder that draws us upward by pulling us out of ourselves in love. Fr. Colum Power uses his exceptional wisdom and wit to enliven our imaginations with stories of the Lord's patient providence that brings us to holiness in and through our homes.
"Man has places in his heart which do not yet exist," said the great Catholic writer Léon Bloy, "and into them enters suffering, in order that they may have existence." With unflinching attention to the inevitable heartbreaks that mark every marriage worth its salt, Fr. Colum Power brings his wit and wisdom to make these wounds into spacious rooms of real wisdom. May many marriages be mended through this book, and may Our Father Who Art in Heaven "turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers" (Malachi 4:6).
